Iron Man

Iron ManIron Man has always been kind of a second-string hero in the Marvel Universe. Never as pretty or popular as Spider-Man, the Hulk, or the X-Men, until now. I’ve always liked Tony Stark a lot (I haven’t read Civil War), and Robert Downey Jr. is always entertaining. I went into this movie with high hopes and lofty expectations… and it delivered.

This film is the first in Marvel’s new world order, the first paid for entirely by Marvel Comics new film fund. Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark is a ... Read more »

Cloverfield

Cloverfield Cloverfield. If you’re at all like me, you’ve been champing at the bit to find out what the hell this movie is since the first teaser trailer was attached to Transformers (I suppose something interesting had to be attached to it). Those first shots were stunning: the party, and the head of Lady Liberty crashing through the streets of Manhattan, shot by a digital handicam, grabbed me. We waited for a title, but there was none. Just the Bad Robot animation, a symbol that we, as Alias fans, ... Read more »

Smudge’s Favorite Albums of 2007

The 13 albums I loved the most this year. Because 10 just isn't enough.

Now that 2007 has come to an end, it’s time for me to look back and give some recognition to all of the fantastic new music that came out this year. Please note that these are in no order other than alphabetical. As far as I’m concerned, everything on this list is flawless, and therefore equal in awesomeness.

1. Bad Religion – New Maps of Hell. I found out about this thing months in advance, and counted the days until its release. Good thing it didn’t disappoint me, right? It’s energetic and ... Read more »

Crooked Little Vein

There are writers who inspire me. There are writers who make me feel horribly inadequate. And there are writers who simply make me stare slackjawed in awe of the shit they think up. I picked up Warren Ellis’ debut novel, Crooked Little Vein yesterday afternoon. It’s an oddly sized hardback, slim and small, perhaps to more easily fit into someone’s small intestine.

I should have known what to expect, I’ve read Transmetropolitan and Lazarus Churchyard, and I read his blog fairly regularly. Joss ... Read more »

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are kind of like Reese’s Cups. Two great tastes that go great together. Each of their previous outings have been phenomenal: Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Corpse Bride are all among my favorite films. Generally, if either of them does something, I’m there, but when they work together, I’m ecstatic.

So it should come as no surprise that I’ve been waiting for Sweeney Todd for a decade. Burton first signed on ... Read more »

The Man Who Grew Roots

This story struck me as an interesting inspiration for a Changeling: the Lost character. Dede, an Indonesian fisherman, was hurt when he was fifteen, and since then, he has literally grown roots. It appears to be a rare conflux of an odd immune anomaly and HPV, but it could just as easily be one of the Lost with a fallen Mask.

Fascinating, either way.

Serj Tankian - “Elect the Dead”

The lead vocalist for system of a Down (SOAD) has definitely made a name for himself. He began working on a solo project immediately after the “Mesmerize/Hypnotize” SOAD albums and the result is “Elect the Dead”.

At first listen, one might think it’s not much different than SOAD. Hard guitars, crazy lyrics, and his own staple, erratic vocals. However, the feel of this album has a much different sound. I personally applaud Serj Tankian for sticking to his genre. There are too many times that ... Read more »

Flyleaf - “Flyleaf”

FlyleafSo, the first time I heard about this band, Flyleaf, was Shadowmancer mentioning something about them on Guitar Hero III. The next time, I heard a snippet of their single “All Around Me” on a commercial, heavily hyping the band. So, I said, why not. I’m not normally one to take a chance on newer rock bands, as I generally don’t enjoy a lot of the music out nowadays. But I was pleasantly surprised.

The first track of their self-titled album sets the tone for the experience and is, by far, the ... Read more »

Clive Barker’s Jericho

by Misfit | Nov 20 2007

Clive Barker has something of a hit and miss relationship when it comes to mediums other than his writing. Movie translations of his work have been… liberal with their transition to the big screen, to say it generously. Much of the source material gets warped at best, completely mangled at worst. However when it comes to games he needs to break in. Undying was an incredible game but it didn’t do as well as it should have and his second game was never even released. Jericho was supposed to be ... Read more »
