So, the first time I heard about this band, Flyleaf, was Shadowmancer mentioning something about them on Guitar Hero III. The next time, I heard a snippet of their single “All Around Me” on a commercial, heavily hyping the band. So, I said, why not. I’m not normally one to take a chance on newer rock bands, as I generally don’t enjoy a lot of the music out nowadays. But I was pleasantly surprised.
The first track of their self-titled album sets the tone for the experience and is, by far, the best of the tracks. “I’m So Sick” features one of the few times on the album that the lead singer screams, and she does it beautifully. On that same note, the vocals for Flyleaf are wonderfully done. You can tell that she worked hard for her sound and is sticking to it, but it is refreshing to hear a feminine voice on the radio that actually belongs to a female.
The rest of the tracks continue on, some of them sticking out more than others. They have a very fluid guitar styling, coming up with original riffs that go in directions you wouldn’t expect, and they do it well. The album itself is pretty fast paced, only featuring 2 songs that could be considered ballads, but even they are still upbeat.
All and all, though, Flyleaf’s debut album is pretty great, 8 out of 10. And to think that it was originally released in 2005! I wonder what took them so long to catch on.
Rating: 8/10
